Materials by Object Type

The packing materials vary depending on what is being shipped: protecting a sofa is not the same as protecting a piece of pottery or an electronic panel. Before packing, each item is inspected to determine the type of box, padding, and securing method it requires.

Used household goods are protected with corrugated cardboard, stretch wrap, bubble wrap, kraft paper, double-wall cardboard boxes, and white paper for delicate items; padded blankets are reserved for local or corporate moves. Electronic equipment is packed in boxes lined with foam or bubble wrap molded to the exact size of the appliance, so that it does not shift inside the box during transport. Glass or ceramic items are wrapped individually, without using cardboard dividers; we also use hanging garment boxes to transport clothes upon the customer’s request. This approach applies whether the packing is part of a full move or is contracted solely to move a single item, and it is documented with a list of contents for each box to facilitate verification when unpacking at the destination.

— Fragile Items

Delicate items and fragile objects

2Mares Logistics no longer offers artwork packaging as a standalone service. When a move includes delicate items—paintings, sculptures, or other fragile objects—they are protected as part of the same process using custom-made boxes, rigid corner protectors, and, in some cases, humidity control, and are photographed before packing to document their condition at the time of pickup.

Unless a move includes one or more works of art—paintings, sculptures, or other pieces—2Mares Logistics does not offer art packaging as a standalone service. When they are part of a move, large-format pieces are packed in boxes custom-built to the exact dimensions of the artwork, with low-density foam at the contact points to prevent direct pressure on the frame or surface, and they are photographed before transport to document their condition. This same level of detail applies to musical instruments, antiques, and collections when they are part of a move. When an item is particularly fragile, it is transported in a fixed position inside the container, separated from the rest of the cargo to prevent any contact during transit.

Does packaging delicate items cost more than a regular box?

Packing a fragile item isn't priced the same way as packing a box of books: it depends on the size, the material, and whether it requires a custom box or humidity control. This also applies to a work of art when it's part of your move. That's why every fragile item is inspected before we provide a fixed price.

— Industrial Cargo

Industrial cargo and general cargo

The packaging and transportation of industrial cargo is handled differently than a residential move: heavy equipment, machinery, or loose goods that are transported without an associated household move.

Industrial equipment typically requires palletizing, securing with chains, straps, or belts, or wooden crates, depending on the weight and shape of the item, as well as protection against moisture if shipped by sea. Loose cargo—that is, goods that do not fill an entire container—can be consolidated with another customer’s shipment on the same route; this option does not significantly reduce costs but is rather an alternative for small shipments that do not require a full container. In both cases, the materials and securing method are determined before a quote is provided, as they vary depending on the type of cargo rather than being based on a single rate.

— International Moving

Full-service move or individual services

There are two ways to arrange for the packing and shipping of cargo: as part of a full international move, or as a standalone service when you only need to move a single item, without moving the rest of your home or office.

When packing is part of a move, the materials and volume are calculated during the same inventory visit that determines the rest of the move. When hired separately, the customer describes the item or shipment, and a one-time visit is scheduled solely for that item, without the need for a full inventory of the rest of the home; it is also possible to have items packed only, without the need for transportation. In both cases, the shipment may be stored in a warehouse for a few days prior to shipment if the transport schedule does not align with the date the item is ready to be shipped; storage and loading/unloading (IN/OUT) incur a separate charge.

Does your shipment include machinery or heavy equipment?

If your shipment includes machinery or heavy equipment, lashing inside the container is coordinated along with the packing to ensure that the cargo arrives protected and properly secured during ocean transport.
